Experimentation With Observational Drawing

Here I have been using wire to recreate some of the observational drawings I have done related to my theme. I am not usually that confident in using wire but I am pleased with the outcomes. I like the looseness to the pieces and the fact that they are not exact copies of the images gives them a more abstract quality.

I think they look really effective as photographs and I enjoyed using the photocopier to experiment with different effects I could achieve. I particularly like the image printed as a negative.

Week of Observational Drawing

This project brief was based around observational drawing of a theme of our choice. I chose to direct my drawing around the idea of people engaged in activity such as shopping, in a café, socialising or on the phone etc. I tried to include a range of techniques to my drawing as well as trying to use different media where possible. My drawings are mainly of people and shops in Chesterfield or people in cafés or restaurants and are mainly produced using pencil or different fineliner pens. I feel when looking back through my drawings in my sketchbook that I have improved and become more confident. My more recent drawings have become less sketchy and bolder using less lines and have included different techniques and approaches to drawing, for example continuous line drawing and drawing using the opposite hand. After completing this week of observational drawing I feel I have improved my ability to observe and draw more accurately, to improve more however I think I could focus on the composition of my drawings more.

'Seaside' Inspired Piece

This piece of work was produced around the theme of the seaside and focuses on our given area of Punch and Judy. The idea for this piece of work is based around the famous puppet show Punch and Judy but instead with a slight twist in the sense that Judy takes revenge on Punch. I am pleased with the final outcome and like the simplicity of the shapes and colours. My favourite aspect is the font as I feel it imitates and reflects well text you associate with Punch and Judy and similar puppet shows.

First Day in Specialist Area

The First piece of work produced on my first day in the Illustration studio. We worked together on one long piece of paper to create observational drawings from the range of objects infront of us. I enjoyed this as it encouraged me to think more about the composotion of my drawing and found that by using different drawing techniques such as continuous line and using the opposite drawing hand, it helped me produce more loose and quirky drawings.
